The UN’s largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s rights concluded today in New York with the strong commitment by UN Member States to achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls. Coming on the heels of unprecedented global activism and public outcry to end gender injustice and discrimination worldwide, the 62nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) reached a robust agreement highlighting the urgency of empowering and supporting those who need it most and have, for too long, been left behind.

Today, 27 September 2015, some 80 world leaders are convening at the United Nations to personally commit to ending discrimination against women by 2030 and announce concrete and measurable actions to kick-start rapid change in their countries. In the context of the upcoming 2015 electoral process in Guatemala, and to promote the participation of women, UN Women – in coordination with The Netherlands Institute for Multi-parity Democracy, USAID, AECID, the Guatemalan Federation of Radio Schools, and the Political Organization of Mayan Women MOLOJ – launched the awareness campaign “Register, Vote and Participate”.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will visit Colombia from 8-9 May. She will meet with Government officials and Members of Congress, as well as representatives of the private sector, the diplomatic corps and civil society. UN Women Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean, Luiza Carvalho, will also accompany the visit.
The Caribbean Joint Statement on Gender Equality and the Post 2015 and SIDS Agenda represents the Caribbean voices and expectations in the emerging Post 2015 and SIDS global agendas as it relates to gender equality.
