On this International Women’s Day, UN Women reaffirms that access to justice is a fundamental right and an essential condition for all women and girls to exercise their rights and live free from violence and discrimination. Despite progress, women worldwide still hold only 64 per cent of the legal rights recognized for men, a gap that reveals justice systems that still do not fully respond to their needs or guarantee effective protection.
From highlighting structural inequalities to calling for genuine political will and strong institutional mechanisms, voices across the region agree that justice cannot wait. Strengthening laws, transforming institutions, and ensuring timely, gender-responsive responses are key to closing these gaps. As regional experience shows, when justice systems work, when they listen, protect, and act, rights stop being promises and become realities that transform lives.
