UNiTE Caribbean Artist Nelly Stharre on Ending to Violence against Women through Music
UNiTE Caribbean artist Nelly Stharre of Dominica, shares on the special and important connections, artists have with their audiences to be effective advocates for the UN Secretary-General's UNiTE to End Violence Against Women Campaign. Nelly Stharre signed onto the campaign in 2010 having participated in a sensitisation workshop conducted by the then UNIFEM Caribbean Office. Engaging in advocacy even prior to her formal association with the campaign, Nelly uses the opportunities offered by her performances, engaging in one on one with her fellow artists as well as through online platforms to advocate for an End to Violence against women. Nelly will for the second year running engage in awareness activities during the world-renowned indigenous World Creole Festival in Dominica which every year attracts thousands of visitors to this Eastern Caribbean island. This interview was conducted during the recently held consultation for 26 artists from Latin America and the Caribbean in Panama City, organised by the Latin America and Caribbean regional office of the UNiTE Campaign.
