HeForShe is a solidarity movement launched in 2014 by UN Women to end inequality and gender stereotypes by engaging men and boys as active advocates and agents of change. The campaign seeks to imply society as a whole to achieve gender equality and involving outstanding personalities as spokespersons is a crucial part in this.

The Argentinian singer and composer Diego Torres, who has committed to different social causes throughout his artistic career, joins the campaign with the conviction to collaborate for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Torres who recently launched his new single “IGUALES” (“EQUAL”) as a call against inequalities, was announced as spokesperson for Latin America and the Caribbean this Thursday 26 May during an event at the Santa Clara Museum in Bogotá where he also signed on to the HeForShe commitment.

The Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean, Luiza Carvalho, the UN Women Representative and Resident Coordinator (a.i.) in Colombia Belén Sanz, journalist Jineth Bedoya, Lucas Calderón, Advisor of the Presidential Council for Gender Equity, and the Colombian HeForShe spokesperson and singer Chabuco, participated in the event.

Luiza Carvalho announced that “Diego Torres joins as HeForShe spokesperson to reaffirm his determination to collaborate for the full exercise of women’s rights. This adhesion is very important for UN Women because we know that music and artists are a powerful vehicle for spreading the message of gender equality and women’s empowerment”. She also emphasized that the world we want will only be possible if we ensure full exercise of women’s rights and urged the public to “create a world colored by hope in which we are all are equal” making reference to Torres’ musical proposal for this cause.

Torres expressed that he feels honored to join this solidarity movement and that he hopes that acting as regional HeForShe spokesperson will engage more young people in favor of equality.

The adhesion to the campaign of Diego Torres gives a very significant boost for HeForShe in Latin America and the Caribbean and positions the region as a reference for men’s commitment with women’s rights.
