Visit of the regional director of the UN Women in Haiti

The UN Women's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Luiza Carvalho, visited Haiti from 21 to 25 January. The Regional Director took the opportunity to visit some projects, implemented by UN Women in response in the aftermath of that impacted. She also took the occasion to meet some important stakeholders, to discuss about ongoing partnership with UN Women.

On her first day in Haiti, Luiza Carvalho visited an agricultural farm built by a local organization with the support of UN Women. The feminist school farm established in the city of Saint-Michel de l'Attalaye is one of the most important projects supported by the UN Women's country Office and is part of the Haitian women's economic empowerment program.

"I am pleased and proud to participate in the launch of this project, and I am sure of the great opportunities and benefits that this initiative will bring to the entire Saint Michel de l'Attalaye community and especially to women," said the Regional Director at the opening of the farm.

UN Women and its Special Fund for Gender Equality firmly believe in this initiative and intend to continue to support the Haitian government and civil society in their efforts to defend gender equality and the rights of women and Haiti, "said the director in her address to the beneficiaries of this project.

Luiza Carvalho also visited the town of Jérémie, destroyed by Hurricane Mathew last October. In this region, UN Women and its partners undertake numerous initiatives in order to support women. Luiza Carvalho invited the women of the department remain strong and resilient to get through this difficult time.

During the four-day visit, the Regional Director met with key partners of the UN Women in Haiti and leaders of Haitian women's organizations. She participated in a workshop on the national strategy to end violence against women. She met with national and international representatives to strengthen partnership between UN Women and those entities.
