Peace can be achieved through justice: the judge of the Sepur Zarco case speaks

"I am convinced that peace can be achieved through justice," says Iris Yasmin Barrios Aguilar, a judge of the First Criminal Court of Guatemala who took the case of Sepur Zarco in her country.

The case of Sepur Zarco was historical, as it obtained the condemnation of two former soldiers after finding them guilty of rape, forced labor and slavery of indigenous rural women of El Estor, Izabal, a Mayan Q'eqchí territory characterized by the dispossession of land in favor of large monoculture estates and economic interests related to mining.
