Message from the United Nations in Haiti on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
Date:
Port-au-Prince, Haiti, June 19, 2024 - On June 19, International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the United Nations in Haiti is launching a new call to action to prevent better and end sexual violence that disproportionately affects Haitian girls and women.
In recent years, reports of sexual crimes in Haiti show a persistent upward trend in these violent acts against women and girls. Sometimes used as weapons of control, these attacks leave lasting physical and emotional scars not only on the survivors but also on Haitian communities as a whole.
This June 19 is an opportunity to underscore the urgent need for concerted action by all actors to provide adequate support to victims and to put in place all necessary mechanisms to create a safe, inclusive, and protective environment in which all women and girls can live without fear of becoming victims of sexual violence.
The UN System in Haiti will continue its efforts to achieve this vision of a world where gender equality is not only a fundamental principle but a tangible reality for all.
On this crucial International Day, we come together to express our unwavering support and solidarity with Haitian women facing extreme conflict and instability challenges.
Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can end sexual violence in times of conflict and offer Haitian women hope for a better future.
