UN Women spoke with Irene Cari, an indigenous activist from the province of Salta in northern Argentina, about violence against women in Argentina and how to prevent it. In 2014 Cari founded the Women’s Forum for Equal Opportunities, an association that supports women and girls experiencing abuse, including sexual abuse. In 2022, she participated in the Third Parliament of Indigenous Women and Diversities for Good Living in Salta, which UN Women supported. She was also a member of the Civil Society Advisory Group of the United Nations Spotlight Initiative, which funds innovative grassroots programmes to end violence against women and girls around the world.

Since 2015, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science has been commemorated every February 11th, a UN initiative that seeks to highlight inequality in science and technology disciplines and empower women in the key role they can play in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Although more women are gaining access to science and technology, at the current rate the gender gap will close by the year 2100.

Ana Saenz leads the response to sexual harassment in the Guatemalan student community. The "Oliverio Castañeda de León" University Students Association (AEU) is the most important student organization in Guatemala and, in its more than one hundred years of history, has given a voice to the student community inside and outside the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. In 2018, I joined the AEU as its first Gender Secretary, a new role in responding to the specific demands and needs of women students.

UN Women today announced the appointment of American award-winning actor Anne Hathaway as global Goodwill Ambassador. A long-standing supporter of women’s and girls’ rights, Ms. Hathaway will put the spotlight on the issue of the unequal burden of care work in the home as one of the key barriers to gender equality, working internationally to advance the adoption and implementation of policies that will bring measurable change. These include affordable childcare services and shared parental leave at both government and corporate levels.
